The old rugged cross, it’s the symbol of suffering and
shame.
Here once in great pain, my Lord Jesus for me endured
the punishment for my sins.
Every stripe on His back for my redemption was lain, each one increasing
His pain.
On that hill far away, between two criminals He was
shamefully, unmercifully hung.
Lord Jesus came to reclaim my life, for my sins He did
awfully pay.
Damned by sin was I, until Jesus rescued me on that
awful day.
Rescued by God’s great love, filled with grace from
above, I now joyfully live in Him.
Unbound from the shackles of sin, yes, I have a new life
in Him.
God’s own Son, took my place, thus I am bound for that
heavenly place.
Given grace I now freely journey home, for to sin I no
longer am bound.
Emmanuel has freed one and all who willingly follow Him
home.
Damned no more am I, for He took my place on that cross,
not willing to count me for loss.
Cruelly tortured and shamed by my casual sins, He paid
for my life with His own.
Redeemed by His
Blood, I now glorify His Holy Name.
On that hill, far away, all my sins He forgave, my
shackles broke and threw away.
Saved by grace in Christ Jesus, I can claim this new
life is now mine.
So I’ll sing of that old rugged cross, and rejoice that
Christ Jesus loves me.
