IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

I looked upon You Lord, as you hung on the bloody cross,
surely I thought, this sight counted as a grievous loss.

Noting the nails within Your hands, the wound within
Your side and the spike within Your feet, this sight made my heart grieve and
skip a beat.

The crown of thorns were hard pressed upon Your pained
and bleeding brow, surely the anger of God would rain just rage upon mankind
now.

Horrible scars and welts on Your tortured flesh, the
nails in Your hands and feet, the piercing in Your side and the thorny crown
all were placed there by my sins.

Emmanuel, oh Lamb of God, You hung upon the tree, with
nothing but an apparent criminal’s fate for all to see.

Sorrow pierced Your mother’s heart and those of your
faithful few, as nearer to the dreadful cross we drew.

Have mercy on them for they know not what they do, is
the only plea we heard from You.

Appalled at what he was a part of, one soldier was heard
to exclaim; “Truly He was the Son God.”, and like him, I hung my head in shame.

Defeating death, with Your resurrection, You gave man an
alternate direction, along the path to eternal salvation.

Our sins were all forgiven Lord, as You took on our
sinful blame, because of Your omnipotent love nothing was to be the same.

Welts upon Thy flesh Lord, my eyes in horror see, for
this I shamefully know, my sins helped place all of them on Thee.

Oh Son of God, I humbly ask of Thee, fill my heart with
Thy loving grace that I may abide securely in Thee.

Father forgive them, I heard you plea for me, in spite
of what my sins had done still You pleaded that for me salvation would be won.

The indignities that You suffered Lord, rightfully were
mine to bear, yet with Your Gift, I suffered naught, not of one single little
hair.

Holy Spirit stand by me in the shadow of the cross, for
by Christ’s suffering and death I’m now not counted lost.

Emmanuel, thou Son of God, now I can live in Thee, for
by Thy most omnipotent love I now have been set free.

Come Holy Spirit this I pray, fill me with Your blessed
grace, clean my soul Lord and of sin leave not a single trace.

Redeemer of mankind this I plea, that the grace of Your
forgiveness You grant me.

Oh Lord, in the shadow of the cross as I stood counting
all for loss, I know my healing had begun in the shadow of that cross.

Salvation was purchased by Your suffering on that cross,
all this You endured so that I would not be counted lost.

Savior mine, God divine, as I stand in the shadow of the
cross, I rejoice, for on Your resurrection I was saved, no longer counted lost.
